NBA Format: Teams, Structure, and Championship

NBA format guide diagram showing Eastern and Western Conferences and playoff bracket

The NBA format is unlike almost any other league in world sport, and understanding it changes how you watch the entire season. The NBA is the strongest basketball league in the world by a distance, and the destination for the best players from every continent. Founded in 1946, it has grown into a global sporting and commercial institution whose following extends far beyond North America. This guide explains the NBA format in full: the conferences, the standings, the playoffs, the draft, and the leading teams.

The NBA Format: Thirty Teams, One Closed System

At its core, the NBA format comprises thirty teams split across two main halves called conferences: the East and the West, fifteen teams each. Each conference is in turn divided into three divisions.

The regular season usually runs from October to April, during which each team plays eighty-two games. This large number of games makes the season a long test of endurance rather than merely a run of matches.

The essential difference from European leagues is that the NBA format is closed: no relegation to lower tiers and no promotion from them. The thirty teams are fixed, and the competition for positions determines qualification for the playoffs rather than survival in the league.

The Conferences and the Standings System

Teams are ranked within each conference separately, not in a unified table. At the end of the regular season, the top ten teams from each conference qualify for the post-season.

But qualification is not direct for all of them. The top six teams in each conference qualify directly for the playoffs. The teams from seventh to tenth contest an additional stage called the Play-In, a series of deciding games that determines the last two playoff spots from each conference.

This system keeps the competition alive even in the middle positions, granting teams that were not guaranteed qualification a last chance through the Play-In.

The NBA Playoff System

The playoffs are the decisive stage that determines the champion, played on a knockout system across a series of rounds. Each round is decided by a best-of-seven series: the team that wins four games first advances to the next round. This favours the more consistent team across the series and reduces the element of surprise compared with a single deciding game.

The rounds progress within each conference: the first round, then the conference semi-finals, then the conference finals. The Eastern Conference champion faces the Western Conference champion in the NBA Finals to determine the league champion. You can see this system in action in our recap of the NBA Summer League 2026.

Home-Court Advantage

The higher-ranked team in the series gets home-court advantage, meaning a greater number of games on its own floor. In a seven-game series, the team with the advantage plays four potential games at home against three for the opponent.

The Most Decorated Teams in the NBA

Titles have historically been concentrated among a handful of storied teams:

  • Boston Celtics: one of the most decorated teams in the league’s history
  • Los Angeles Lakers: a historic rival at the top of the title count, with a global following
  • Golden State Warriors: a modern power with a run of titles in the last decade
  • Chicago Bulls: a name tied to the era of dominance in the 1990s

The historic rivalry between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers is considered one of the most famous in the history of American sport, and their meeting in the Finals has recurred many times across the decades.

The Draft System: How Talent Is Distributed

Among the most distinctive features of the NBA format is the draft, an annual mechanism for distributing new players coming from colleges and elsewhere among the teams.

The basic principle is that the weakest-performing teams from the completed season get priority for early selection, with the aim of achieving long-term competitive balance. A team that finished in a low position gets a chance to pick a promising talent ahead of the leading teams.

The order of the top picks is decided through a lottery among the weakest teams, to prevent deliberate losing to guarantee an early selection. This is one of the league’s most important tools for maintaining balance between teams over the long run, and it distinguishes the NBA format fundamentally from open leagues.

Why the NBA Draws This Following

Several factors explain the league’s global reach. The first is the concentration of the world’s best players in it, which makes it the highest technical level in the game by a distance.

The second is the system of competitive balance through the draft and the salary cap, which prevents a single team from dominating for long periods and keeps the competition open. The third is the fast pace and the spectacular character of the game, which makes the matches visually appealing to a wide audience across the world, including a growing Arabic-speaking following.

The NBA Format Summary

The NBA format is a closed system of thirty teams split across two conferences, awarding one title through a playoff of seven-game series, and distributing talent through a draft that gives priority to the weakest teams. What distinguishes the NBA format from European leagues is the absence of relegation and promotion, and the presence of deliberate mechanisms for competitive balance. Anyone who understands the conference, playoff, and draft systems watches the season with a different eye: not merely matches, but an integrated system designed to keep the competition alive across thirty teams.
